John Lofthouse

Originally from Levens in the Lake District, John Lofthouse graduated from Durham University with a degree in Theology and subsequently studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio.

John Lofthouse performs regularly for Opera Holland Park where his roles have included Happy La Fanciulla del West, Yamadori Madama Butterfly, Amantio di Nicolao Gianni Schicchi, White Knight and Hare Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Farmer Bean The Fantastic Mr Fox, Marullo Rigoletto, Morales Carmen, Il sacristano Tosca, John Styx Orpheus in the Underworld, and Vicomte Cascada The Merry Widow.

Other operatic engagements have included Guglielmo Cosi fan tutte for Grange Park Opera, Demetrius A Midsummer Night's Dream for British Youth Opera, Pirate King The Pirates of Penzance for Buxton Festival, Fiuta La capricciosa corretta for Bampton Classical Opera and Chef Bake for One Hour for English National Opera - Baylis programme.

John Lofthouse’s repertoire also includes Figaro Il barbiere di Siviglia, Dancairo/Morales Carmen, High Commissioner Madam Butterfly, Mr Bluff The Impresario, Ford The Merry Wives of Windsor, Danilo The Merry Widow, Papageno The Magic Flute, Eisenstein and Dr Falke Die Fledermaus, Imeneo Imeneo (Handel), Dancairo Carmen, and Chao Sun A Night at the Chinese Opera.

John Lofthouse has a busy concert diary and recent oratorio performances include Mendelssohn Elijah, Handel Judas Maccabaeus, Handel Messiah, Mozart Requiem, Bach St John Passion, Britten War Requiem, Vaughan Williams Mystical Songs and Dona Nobis Pacem, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast and Schuhumann’s Dichterliebe. He has sung recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall in Songbook, St. John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall, National Portrait Gallery, the Pump Room in Bath as well as opera favourites on an exercise bike in Trafalgar Square as part of London's cycle campaign!

For English National Opera John Lofthouse recently covered the roles of Bormenthal A Dog’s Heart, Tadeusz The Passenger, Figaro The Barber of Seville, Frank Die Fledermaus and Yamadori.  Most recently he repeated Amantio di Nicolao Gianni Schicchi, and the roles of White Knight and Hare Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park. He returns to Holland Park this Summer to sing Frank Die Fledermaus and White Knight and Hare Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
