Fredrik Akselberg

The young Norwegian tenor Fredrik Akselberg studied at the Music Conservatory in Stavanger and at the Royal College of Music in London, where he received the Thomas Mohrherr Prize in the Peter Pears´ Singing Competition.   He continued his studies at the International Opera Studio at the Staatsoper Hamburg.

Fredrik Akselberg was a member of the ensemble at Theater Kiel where his roles included Mercure and Thespis in Rameau’s Platée, Don Curzio Le nozze di Figaro, Sir Hervey Anna Bolena, and Dritte Knappe Parsifal.  

Fredrik Akselberg’s opera engagements have included Andres Wozzeck at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Count Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia and Pastore in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Norwegian National Opera, the title role in Rameau’s Platée in Augsburg, Liberto and Soldato 2 L'incoronazione di Poppea in Bordeaux, Testo in Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Opéra de Monte Carlo, Théâtre des Gémaux Sceaux and Opéra de Bordeaux, Testus in Scarlatti’s Davidis pugna et victoria in Torino, Acis Acis and Galatea in Fürth, Ferrando Cosi fan tutte at the Bergedorfer Musiktage, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni at the Lyckaa Chamber Music Festival in Sweden, Tom Wingfield in Antonio Bibalo’s The Glassmenagerie with Opera Vest and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins and Malcolm Williamson’s The Happy Prince in Stavanger.

Fredrik Akselberg is a much sought after concert singer and has appeared in concert halls and festivals throughout Europe.  He regularly works with conductors such as Alessandro De Marchi, Fabio Biondi, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Kenneth Weiss, Ruben Jais, Robin Ticciati and Michel Corboz.

His concert repertoire includes the Arias and the Evangelist in Bach St Matthew Passion and St John Passion, Bach Mass in B minor, Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat, Mass in G and many Cantatas, Mozart Requiem and Mass in C minor, Handel Messiah, Dettingen Te Deum and Esther; Haydn Die Schöpfung and Theresienmesse, Dvorak Stabat Mater, Mendelssohn Elijah, Monteverdi Marienvespers, Gounod Messe Solennelle, Buxtehude Jesu Membra Nostri, Arvo Pärt Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem, and Britten Saint Nicholas and Rejoice in the Lamb.

Fredrik Akselberg’s recent concert engagements have included Purcell Indian Queen with the B`rock Orchestra Gent, Mozart Requiem in Tonsberg, Bach Kaffee Kantate at Theater an der Wien, Schumann Das Paradies und die Peri with Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Bach Mass in B minor in Oslo, concerts with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and Uriah in the world premiere of Staale Kleiberg David and Bathsheba in Trondheim.

Fredrik Akselberg recently sang Ernesto Don Pasquale for Opera Theatre Company, Dublin; performances and a recording of Staale Kleiberg’s David and Bathsheba.  His forthcoming engagements include Mozart Mass in C Minor with Grex Vocalis and the Orchestra Barokkanerne in Oslo Cathedral,  the role of High Priest in World Premiere of Heksehammeren by Ragnar Rasmussen with SANGKRAFT in Finnmark, Norway, Haydn Die Schöpfung with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra in Tromso and Bach Christmas oratorio in Stavanger Cathedral

Fredrik Akselberg’s recordings include Stradella’s San Giovanni Battista and Scarlatti’s Davidis pugna et victoria, under Alessandro de Marchi for Hyperion Records.  He is featured as a soloist on Ann Hallenberg’s CD of  Rossini arias with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra under Fabio Biondi, which will be released in 2012.
