JONATHAN STOUGHTON
Jonathan Stoughton was born in London. He read French at University College London and was a lay-clerk at both Magdalen College and New College, Oxford. He studied in the Benjamin Britten International Opera School at the Royal College of Music as a scholar, supported by a Jennifer and Robert Diamond Award. He went on to complete the one year course at the National Opera Studio supported by the Alan Burrier Scholarship.

He has taken part in master classes with John Fisher (Welsh National Opera), Kathryn Harries (The National Opera Studio), Philip Langridge (British Youth Opera) and Ann Murray (Young Singers Welfare Association).

Jonathan Stoughton has worked as a principal with British Youth Opera, The Opera Project, University College Opera, Bampton Classical Opera, Pavilion Opera and Opera South. His recent roles include Don José Carmen, Tamino Die Zauberflöte, Lensky Eugene Onegin and Pizzaro Leonora (Paer).

For the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, Aldeburgh, he appeared as Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress. His roles at the National Opera Studio included Don José Carmen, Pollione Norma, Idomeneo Idomeneo, Max Der Freischütz, Werther Werther and Peter Grimes Peter Grimes

As an oratorio and concert soloist Jonathan Stoughton has performed in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Sadler’s Wells, St. John’s Smith Square, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and both the Athens and Tokyo Festivals.

Engagements have included Beethoven Symphony No 9, Puccini Messa di Gloria, Dvorak Stabat Mater, Messiah and Pinkerton Madama Butterly at Dartington International Summer School. He made his Glyndebourne On Tour debut last autumn in the role of Steva Jenufa. Future engagements include a series of gala concerts in major venues around the UK. He is currently covering Rodolfo La Boheme for Opera North.
