ANDREA SZANTO
Andrea Szántó was awarded Joint First Prize at the International Baroque Singing Competition of Hungarian Radio and Television and was also awarded the ‘Margit Szilvássy’ Annual Award and the ‘Annie Fischer’ Scholarship. Other scholarships have enabled her to work with Christoph Eschenbach at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, with Katia Ricciarelli in Desenzano, Italy, with Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge in Budapest and with Grace Bumbry in Switzerland.

Andrea Szántó began her career at the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest, where her roles included Page Salome, Maddalena Rigoletto, I Norn Götterdämmerung and Flora La traviata. She moved to Germany to take up a contract at the Theater Bielefeld where her roles included Carmen, Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel, Nicklaus Les contes d’Hoffmann, Olga Eugene Onegin and Maddalena Rigoletto.

Andrea Szántó is a member of the Nationaltheater in Mannheim. Her roles have included Judith Duke of Bluebeard’s Castle, Carmen Carmen, Sesto and Annio La clemenza di Tito, Romeo I Capuleti ed i Montecchi, Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Hermia A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel, Lucilla La scala di seta, Charlotte Werther, Marina Mnishek Boris Godunov, Nicklaus Les contes d’Hoffmann, Oktavian Der Rosenkavalier, Prinz Orlofsky Die Fledermaus, Flosshilde Das Rheingold, Grimgerde Die Walküre, SecondNorn/Wellgunde Götterdämmerung, Maddalena Rigoletto and Preziosilla La forza del destino, Princess Julie in the stage world premiere of Lalo’s Fiesque, Smeaton Anna Bolena, Frugola Il tabarro, La Principessa Suor Angelica and Zita Gianni Schicchi.

Andrea Szántó’s guest engagements have included Baronessa Irene La vera costanza at the Eisenstadt Festival, Charlotte Werther in Dortmund, Sesto La clemenza di Tito in Budapest, Idamante Idomeneo in Barcelona, Carmen in Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Hannover, Frugola in Frankfurt and Zeffka The Diary of One Who Disappeared at Bregenz Festival.

Andrea Szántó’s concert repertoire includes the J. S. Bach Passions and Cantatas, Berlioz Roméo et Juliette, the Rossini Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solonelle, Brahms Alto Rhapsody and the Verdi Requiem.

Andrea Szántó made her début at Scottish Opera as Judith Duke Bluebeard’s Castle a role she has also sung in Nagoya and in the Budapest Spring Festival. She also sang the title role in Carmen for Scottish Opera, for Grazer Oper and for the Open Air Festival at Schwerin.

Her current roles at the Theatre Mannheim are Santuzza Cavalleria Rusticana, Elisabetta Maria Stuarda, Komponist Ariadne auf Naxos, Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Prinz Orlofsky Die Fledermaus, Frugola Il Tabarro, La Principessa Suor Angelica and Zita Gianni Schicchi.
