NICHOLAS FOLWELL
Nicholas Folwell, who is bi-lingual in German and English, made his début at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as The Poacher The Cunning Little Vixen under Sir Simon Rattle. His roles for English National Opera include Sharpless Madam Butterfly, Bosun Billy Budd, The Host of the Garter Sir John in Love (Vaughan Williams), Antonio Le nozze di Figaro, Falke, The Chief of Police Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Police Commissioner Der Rosenkavalier, The Poacher and The Forester The Cunning Little Vixen,, Papageno, Mutius in the world premiere of Stephen Oliver’s Timon of Athens, Sancho Don Quixotte (Massenet), Major Mary Die Soldaten, The Music Master Ariadne on Naxos, the title role in the world premiere of Judith Weir’s Blond Eckbert and Mr van Tricasse in the world premiere of Gavin Bryar’s Dr Ox’s Experiment.
For Scottish Opera he performed Dr Bartolo Il barbiere di Siviglia, Mumlal The Two Widows (Smetana), The Four Villains The Tales of Hoffman, Figaro, Alberich, Melitone and Creon & The Messenger Oedipus Rex. For Glyndebourne on Tour he has sung Pizzaro and Figaro. Roles at Opera North have included Beckmesser, Leporello and Count Laski in Chabrier’s Le Roi Malgré Lui. At Opera Holland Park he has sung Monterrone Rigoletto, Sharpless Madama Butterfly, Pizarro Fidelio and Benoit & Alcindoro La Boheme. With Welsh National Opera his roles include Figaro and Leporello, Pizzaro, Melitone, Escamillo, The Poacher The Cunning Little Vixen, Alberich, Melot and Klingsor which he recorded under Sir Reginald Goodall. Nicholas Folwell’s international opera engagements have included Alberich Der Ring des Nibelungen in Nantes, Dreieinigkeitsmoses Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny for the Opera d’Angers-Nantes and Opera de Lille, Koroviev in the world premiere of York Höller’s Der Meister und Margarita at the Paris Opera, Figaro for Opera Zuid, Masetto for New Israeli Opera, Ottokar Der Freischütz at the Zwingenberger Festival, Marullo in Frankfurt, Belcore L’Elisir d’Amore, Germont La traviata and Escamillo Carmen in Ireland. Nicholas Folwell has also appeared in concert performances of several stage works, including The Seven Deadly Sins, at London’s South Bank Centre, and with the London Sinfonietta and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, Pizzaro with Kurt Masur and the LPO at the Festival Hall, Lysiart Euyranthe with Mark Elder and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bluebeard Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Paul Die Tote Stadt, Simone Trovai Violante by Erich Korngold, Méphistophélès Faust et Hélène by Lili Boulanger and the title role in Der Fliegende Holländer for Chelsea Opera Group at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank, London. Nicholas Folwell’s concert repertoire ranges from Mahler’s 8th Symphony with Gary Bertini in Torino and The Dream of Gerontius with Yuri Simanov in Brussels to contemporary works such as the world premieres of Ian Hamilton’s Prometheus in Cambridge, Vinko Globokar’s Sternbild der Grenze in Paris and Claudio Ambrosini’s Proverbs of Hell for RAI in Rome. His frequent broadcasts for the BBC include Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg with Lothar Zargrosek, The Short Prisoner From the House of the Dead, Harrison Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus, and The Fiery Angel at the BBC Proms. Recent engagements have included Dr Bartolo Il barbiere di Siviglia and Mumlal The Two Widows for Scottish Opera; the Police Commissioner Der Rosenkavalier and Antonio Le nozze di Figaro for English National Opera; The Doctor Punch and Judy (Birtwistle) for Music Theatre Wales, and Dr Bartolo Le nozze di Figaro at the Festival Rotas dos Monumentos in Portugal; Alberich and Hunding in Der Ring des Nibelungen and Don Alfonso for Longborough Festival Opera; Monterone for Opera Holland Park; a performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony at the QEH with Martyn Brabbins; and various roles in a Ravel double bill of L’Heure Espagnol and L’Enfant et les Sortiléges for Opera Zuid in Maastricht. Operatic world premières Nicholas Folwell has performed include the leading role of Pope Clement V1 in Light Passing by Nicola LeFanu in York, which was broadcast by BBC TV and a new Judith Weir opera, Armida written for television and filmed in Morocco for Channel 4 TV. Nicholas Folwell’s most recent engagements were Kuligin Katya Kabanova for English National Opera, Alberich Der Ring des Niebelungen with Nationale Reisopera and the role of Charles For You for Music Theatre Wales. Future appearances include Antonio Le nozze di Figaro and Nachtigall Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden Alberich Der Ring des Nibelungen and the Forester Cunning Little Vixen for Nationale Reisopera.
